ABOUT THE NOTEBOOK

Curiosity,
with a source beside it.

An independent reading project about the Norse myths and what lies behind them.

What this site does

norse-myths.folklore.im retells Norse myths in our own words from a public-domain translation of the Younger Edda, and sets them beside what the records, historians and heritage bodies actually say, with a guide to Thorwald’s Cross in Kirk Andreas on the Isle of Man. It has a timeline, a quiz, a sorting game and a stamp card. It is made for curious readers, families and teachers. It is not an official heritage website.

Truth first

Every factual sentence carries one of three labels: History, Literature or Tradition. A story in a poem or an old book is never presented as a historical event, and a carving of a god is never presented as proof that the god was real.

Not connected with any film, TV show or game

This site draws only on an old public-domain text, heritage sources and public-domain pictures. It is not connected with, or endorsed by, any film, television, book series, game or toy company that features Norse gods. Modern versions of these myths are not retold or quoted here.
